Luton Town fans bombarded the club's new officials with a barrage of abuse as they protested against the sacking of boss Joe Kinnear.
The fans amassed at the entrance to Luton's Kenilworth Road ground on Tuesday evening to force the men in charge of appointing Kinnear's successor into reconsidering their position.
Former Peterborough chairman Roger Terrell and well-travelled striker Lee Power are set to be unveiled as Luton's new chairman and vice-chairman respectively at a board meeting on Wednesday.
The pair - who will announce a new manager within 10 days - were put in place after a mystery consortium took over the club, ousting Kinnear and his assistant Mick Harford.
But Power told the official Luton website on Tuesday: "We thought we were coming here today to be appointed, but after what happened on the way in we
are reconsidering our position.
"We were approached by someone representing the directors to run the football
side of things.
"We have
spoken to three or four people, but we were not involved in what happened to Joe
and Mick. We inherited that.
"At the moment we are reconsidering our position because there is a lot to
take in and a lot of questions that we need to ask and we need to get some
answers."
Former England defender Terry Fenwick has been linked with the job, provoking strong opposition from fans on the club's internet message boards and outside the ground.
Fenwick was sacked as Northampton Town boss in January after a disastrous seven-match spell in charge.
