Houllier targets Biscan

Liverpool hope to edge out Barcelona and Juventus in the transfer battle for Croatian midfielder Igor Biscan.

A spokesman for 22-year-old Biscan's club Dinamo Zagreb claimed a deal had been agreed between all parties and he would join Liverpool in December.

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier confirmed: "We have been following him since February last year and he is a player we are interested in."

Zagreb have priced Biscan at 8m, but he is out of contract next summer and can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

It has alerted clubs in Spain and Italy, but Dinamo spokesman Ivan Rotin said: "Igor met the Liverpool people in London last week. He will be in Liverpool after 15 December."

Biscan will need a work permit, and Liverpool's quota of players who need a permit is usually filled by Stephane Henchoz, Vladimir Smicer and Patrik Berger.

Berger, however, will no longer be classed in the category next season after being in England five years.
