Keeper Charles Itandje quits Liverpool for Atromitos

Liverpool keeper Charles Itandje will join Greek side Atromitos on 1 January after being released from his contract.

The French-born 28-year-old, who recently switched nationality to Cameroon, joined Liverpool in 2007.

However, he made just seven appearances for the club and none since he was widely criticised for his antics during the 2009 Hillsborough memorial service.

Members of the congregation complained Itandje disrespected the service and he was suspended by the club for 14 days.

The keeper released an emphatic apology, saying: "I am sorry. I am sorry. I am sorry. A thousand times, I am sorry. To the club, to the fans and especially to the families, I am deeply sorry."

However, he never forced his way back into the first-team reckoning and, following a loan at another Greek side Kavala last season, he will now move to the country on a permanent basis to join Atromitos.

Meanwhile, with the club already through to the knockout stages of the Europa League, Liverpool are offering free tickets to children for next Wednesday's match against Dutch side FC Utrecht at Anfield.

Up to four free tickets for fans under the age of 17 will be available when an adult buys a £20 ticket - around half the price of a normal Premier League matchday ticket.

"We have been listening to supporters since we arrived at the club and one of the key things we have been told is to make sure a new generation of fans are always able to watch the team in action," Liverpool chairman Tom Werner said on the club website.

"As a small gesture of our appreciation of the welcome we have been afforded so far, and in recognition of the fact that it is a very costly time of year for families, particularly those with young children, we have decided to make tickets for the Utrecht game free for kids."
