Liverpool will not rush any takeover deal, says Purslow

Liverpool will not rush into any takeover deal despite needing new owners "as soon as possible", says managing director Christian Purslow.

"We have had a number of bids [and] will take time to examine those extremely carefully," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.

"I am not going to put a time limit on it. The challenge now is to sort the wheat from the chaff."

Purslow also denied key Anfield banker RBS is planning its own takeover.

"We have excellent relations with our lead bankers RBS, we've been in constant dialogue with them, and I am extremely comfortable with that working relationship," he said.

Current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who remain deeply unpopular with a majority of Liverpool fans, are keen to sell the club.

But despite their desire to offload the Anfield outfit, Purslow insisted: "We will make sure we take our time.

"We have just received some written bids at this stage, and it would be wrong to characterise anybody as a front-runner."

Liverpool, only seventh in the Barclays Premier League last season, are in urgent need of a much more successful campaign under new manager Roy Hodgson.

They have managed to retain the services of stalwart captain Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres, as well as signing Joe Cole from Chelsea.

But Purslow accepts there will be some departures too, with Argentine international midfielder Javier Mascherano among the most likely to leave.

"The target is significant improvement. We think our club and players belong in the Champions League - so that is where we would like to be," said Purslow.

"I think there will be one or two more ins and outs. There are a few people who will move on.

"Javier has been wanting to go for personal reasons. We have not had any offers for him, and the manager is very happy with him, but it is true he is looking for a move."
