Young Scottish defender Danny Wilson has signed for Liverpool on a three-year deal after moving from Rangers.

Liverpool will pay Rangers £2m up front for the 18-year-old with a further £3m dependent on appearances and add-ons.

A former Rangers youth player, Wilson had 12 months of his deal remaining and turned down an offer to stay at Ibrox.

"There were other clubs interested in me who are in the Champions League, but once Liverpool came in there was only one team I wanted to go to," he said.

"This is a massive challenge for me," added the Scottish Professional Footballers Association and Football Writers' Young Player of the Year. "This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.

"Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that's the reason I came here."

Wilson is the third arrival at Anfield during the close season, following the free-transfer signings of Joe Cole from Chelsea and Milan Jovanovic from Standard Liege.

Had Wilson allowed his current deal to expire, Rangers would have expected to receive only £500,000 in compensation.

Danny was entering the final year of his contract with the club and had indicated that he felt it was in his interests to move on

"Danny was entering the final year of his contract with the club and had indicated that he felt it was in his interests to move on," Gers chief executive Martin Bain told Scottish Premier League champions' website .

"Given that and the value of the offer from Liverpool it was deemed appropriate to accept that offer given the player wanted to go."

Rangers had been hopeful that Wilson would sign a contract offered to the player in April.

The day after he scored his first goal for Rangers, in a 4-1 win over Hearts on 27 March, manager Walter Smith said he expected Wilson to follow the example of fellow Rangers teenager John Fleck by signing a contract extension.

Wilson became a first-team regular at Ibrox last season and made 24 appearances for the Gers.
