Brad Friedel's career in England is in the balance

Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Friedel is stranded in the United States as he attempts to re-ignite his career.

Friedel was scheduled to return to Merseyside this week, but the Department for Education and Employment have refused to grant him a work permit.

Friedel's application was turned down because he did not play in 75% of Liverpool's matches last season.

Appeal

Liverpool are likely to appeal against the decision, and Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness is watching developments as he chases Friedel.

It may take time, however, for Friedel's future to become clear, because even if an appeal was successful, he would then have to re-apply for his work permit.
