Gerrard to make Liverpool return

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez expects to have captain Steven Gerrard fit to face Newcastle on Sunday.

The midfielder has resumed training after a groin injury which has kept him out since 8 April when the Reds lost 3-1 to Chelsea in the Champions League.

Benitez said: "Steven is doing well and is training with the rest of the team.

"I think he will be fit and available for Sunday. It is good news for the team and for him because he can be a key player over the remaining games."

In Gerrard's absence, the Reds have beaten Blackburn and Hull in the league but drawn 4-4 against Arsenal.

The influential midfielder also had to watch from the sidelines as the Merseysiders drew 4-4 with Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final - a result which saw them exit the competition.

Liverpool have four games left in the league and are trying to make up a three point gap on leaders Manchester United, who also have a game in hand.

Benitez will be boosted by Gerrard's return but added: "Without Steven the squad has been playing well and scoring goals, so that is positive."
