Gill denies Benitez accusations

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has dismissed Rafa Benitez's claim his place on the Football Association board creates a conflict of interest.

"I'm not representing Manchester United," he said on Wednesday. "We don't get special treatment because of that, that's not the way we operate.

"I was surprised by [his comments] and I think they are totally inaccurate."

Liverpool manager Benitez made the accusation days after claiming United's Sir Alex Ferguson bullied officials.

Benitez's verbal assault on the Premier League champions started in the build-up to Saturday's match at Stoke, which league leaders Liverpool could only draw 0-0.

The reality, if you look and the decisions and issues, [is that] anyone would understand that we don't get special treatment

The following day Ferguson branded the Spaniard's comments "ridiculous".

But Benitez continued to question Liverpool's fierce north-west rivals and on Monday he suggested Gill's position on the FA board gave United unfair leverage.

"They were saying we are a threat," said Benitez. "Now they know we are, they are playing mind games.

"But I don't think it's a mind game when you have control over everything; it's a mind game when you have the same level as the other people, then you can show you are cleverer than the others.

"But when you have control of everything and your chief executive is powerful in the FA and things like this, then that is not mind games.

"Is there a conflict of interest with David Gill at the FA?

"That is another fact. It is a fact that one person has a lot of power and control, and is on a lot of committees in the FA. To me that is very strange."
