Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez insists that Steven Gerrard's groin injury will not rule him out of the start of the new season.

The Reds captain, 28, was sent home from their training camp in Switzerland on Saturday.

"Steven's problem is not serious but he cannot train so we decided to send him back to Melwood," said Benitez.

"He should be OK in about a week. It's not serious but there's no point him staying here unable to train or play."

Meanwhile, Gerrard will receive an Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University on Friday in recognition of his services to sport.

"I am very proud to become a Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University," stated Gerrard.

"Not only has LJMU done so much for this city and the people of Liverpool but it has given the science of football international credibility. It is an honour to be recognised with this award."
