Liverpool have completed the signing of Udinese full-back Andrea Dossena.

The left-back had been expected to make the move to Anfield for some time and the deal was completed on Friday.

The 26-year-old Italian has signed a four-year deal with Rafael Benitez's side, and is seen as a replacement for John Arne Riise, who has joined Roma.

Dossena has been capped once by Italy, in a friendly in 2007, and joins Borussia Dortmund defender Philipp Degen, who signed on Thursday.

Chief executive Rick Parry paid tribute to Norwegian defender Riise, who spent seven years at Anfield.

"John was an incredibly enthusiastic defender who was always a great pro," he told the club's official website.

"He worked hard and never gave us a minute's trouble. The fans will remember that powerful shot of his that brought them to their feet on many occasions.

"We had a good chat about his time here and he wants to thank the fans for the support he was given down the years. He secured Champions League and FA Cup success at Anfield and also helped us win the Worthington Cup and two European Super Cups."
