Liverpool duo on way back
Liverpool's Danny Murphy
Murphy (centre) says he is on the road back to full fitness
Liverpool duo Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard are both expected to be fit for the start of the club's pre-season training.

The England midfielders had to watch the World Cup finals from home after suffering foot and groin injuries just before the tournament.

But, after undergoing rehabilitation training at Melwood, both are scheduled to resume work with the rest of their team-mates on 10 July.

It was a massive disappointment for me not to be at the World Cup
Danny Murphy

"The crutches are finished with and I've started walking properly again this week," Murphy said.

"Now I'm starting to do some fitness work. I hope to be starting pre-season with the others.

"The worst-case scenario would be to wait another week but I don't think that will be necessary."

Murphy said of Gerrard: "Stevie is flying. He's running already now. Like me, he will be fine for the start of pre-season."

He also told the club's website that Jamie Carragher seems to be progressing well from knee surgery.

"With a bit of luck the gaffer will have his strongest squad to choose from at the start of the new season."

Murphy suffered the injury just days before the World Cup and he admitted that he found watching Sven-Goran Eriksson's men on television almost unbearable.

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard
Gerrard also missed out on the World Cup

"I have to admit, initially it was difficult watching the games," Murphy said.

"I've been trying to look forward as much as I can, but the reality is it was a massive disappointment for me not to be out there.

"I don't think anything can replace that feeling of loss when you know a great chance to play in a tournament like that has gone.

"Yes, I will be fitter and fresher at the start of the season, but realistically that's not going to make me glad I missed the World Cup.

"It got easier to enjoy it because it's been a good competition with plenty of shocks and surprises.

"As a football fan, you can't not enjoy watching the World Cup. But it wasn't always easy for me."
