Carragher seeks knee cure
Liverpool's Jamie Carragher (left)
Carragher's (left) knee has dashed his World Cup bid
Jamie Carragher flies to the United States on Monday to see a specialist he hopes will solve the knee injury that has robbed him of a World Cup finals place.

The Liverpool full-back was omitted from Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad to give him time to sort out a problem that has dogged him all season.

Carragher will play his 53rd game of the season on Saturday when Liverpool bid for the Premiership runners-up spot in their final home game with Ipswich.

I know not playing for Liverpool would hurt me more than not playing for England

But on Monday he will head out to the States to see a specialist.

"If I see the right people and get a couple of months rest then hopefully it will be sorted," said the defender.

"I'll then find out if the knee needs to be operated on. Touch wood, it will just need rest."

England boss Eriksson has been aware of Carragher's knee problem for some time and decided it was not worth the risk of selecting him.

Carragher added: "Playing for England is a bonus but playing for Liverpool is what I want to do.

"I know not playing for Liverpool would hurt me more than not playing for England. That is the main thing for me.

"It is disappointing to be missing out on the World Cup.

"But, as I've said, it would be more disappointing to break down with a serious knee injury and be out of action for a lengthy spell."
