Berger seeks all-clear stateside
Patrick Berger
Patrick Berger hopes to put injury woes behind him
Liverpool's Czech Republic international Patrik Berger will jet out to the United States to check the progress of his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

Berger underwent surgery at the hands of Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado after he badly twisted his knee in Liverpool's 4-3 Premier league defeat by Leeds United on 4 November.

The midfielder is now returning to the States for a check-up with the surgeon.

"I'm not going there for a holiday," Berger said on his personal website.

"I'll be travelling with one of our physios, Mark Browse, and with Jamie Redknapp, who was also operated on over there by Dr Steadman.

"I don't feel any pain and my leg is strong. It's just that my injured knee is one centimetre smaller in circumference than my good one. I'll have to work on that."

Berger added: "I'll have my normal treatment with Mark on Monday morning in the hospital gym, and on Tuesday I have an appointment with Dr Steadman.

"He'll assess the state of my knee and will be able to tell me if I can start running next week."

Berger is hoping to make a first-team comeback for Liverpool by the end of February if he gets the go-ahead to do some jogging.

The Prague-born player, who has scored 18 goals in 40 appearances for the Czech Republic, joined Liverpool after starring for his national team during Euro 96.
