Biscan is a 5.5m 'double risk'
Biscan is prized by Liverpool for his versatility
Liverpool completed the 5.5m signing of Croatian midfielder Igor Biscan only for manager Gerard Houllier to say the signing was a double risk.

Not only is the future of Europe's transfer market still undecided but Houllier is not even sure the 6'5" 22-year-old is good enough to hold down a first team place.

"The price isn't low. We are aware of that, but we are living in an era of football where you have to buy the potential because the finished article is too expensive," said Houllier.

"We are trying to build a team and we now have a side that is starting to blossom and Igor will be part of that."

The Liverpool boss first stumbled across the Croatian international by accident when sending scouts to watch Dynamo Zagreb in a Champions League game.

"They came back and said the player I was looking at was not what I wanted and advised me to watch Igor.

Style of play

"We have followed him ever since, and he was captain of his club at 22, so that shows he has the character he needs to do well here," said the Frenchman.

Biscan revealed the transfer has taken six months to complete, but he feels his style of play can boost Liverpool.

"I think even though I am still young I can bring some power and skill and I believe I will find my place," he said.

"I've waited for a long time to come here and now I want to prove I can play here."

Biscan could feature against Ipswich on Sunday but he is unavailable for Liverpool's Uefa Cup games after already playing in European competition for Zagreb earlier this season.

Liverpool had to wait to buy him until the Croatian league entered its mid-winter break, and Biscan scored on his final appearance for Zagreb in a 3-2 success over big rivals Hajduk Split.
