Kielty boost for Leigh
Leigh RMI midfielder Ged Kielty
Kielty has pledged his immediate future to Leigh

Leigh RMI manager Steve Waywell has continued his planning for next season by signing midfielder Ged Kielty on a new two-year contract.

Waywell is keen to keep together the nucleus of a squad that enjoyed an outstanding second half of the season to comfortably secure Nationwide Conference safety.

And having recently agreed new deals with Gerry Harrison and Neil Durkin, Waywell is delighted that Kielty has followed them in putting pen to paper.

He said: "It's a good signing for us. Ged's only 25, he's a very skilful player with a good brain and while he hasn't scored as many goals as usual this season, he does get goals from midfield.

"I'm hoping that everyone I want to sign will re-sign and if I can sign three or four more players in the close-season that will strengthen us further."

Leigh are hoping that top-scorer Michael Twiss will be one of those to sign a new deal, although the former Port Vale striker is believed to be wanted by a number of other clubs.

Conference rivals Morecambe are reported to be among those interested in the 24-year-old former Manchester United trainee.

Waywell admits that with the player looking for a return to full-time football it may be hard to keep him at Hilton Park.

But he insisted: "I've told him that I want him to stay.

"We haven't talked money and I don't think we could compete with what other clubs might pay.

"But we want him to stay and if things don't work out in pre-season and he doesn't get the club he wants he will be welcome."

Waywell will be disappointed if he loses a player that was given his chance by Leigh after being turned down by a number of other clubs last summer.

But he added: "If he does go we will just have to go out and get another striker, and I have a couple in mind."
