Powell alive and kicking at 40

Veteran Leicester and former England defender Chris Powell says he is still loving his football at the age of 40.

The left-back, who has five international caps to his name, has made over 750 appearances for eight clubs, in a career spanning 23 years.

Powell told BBC Late Kick Off: "I love this game and I always wanted to become a footballer.

"I have managed to achieve that, not just through luck but through sheer hard work."

Powell began his career at Crystal Palace and has since played for Aldershot, Southend, Derby, Charlton, Watford and West Ham.

He is now first-team player-coach at Leicester and is still registered as a player.

Date of birth: 8 September 1969
Birth place: Lambeth, London

"I have always enjoyed whatever club I have played at as I know how fortunate I am to be a professional footballer," added Powell. "It is a job I would've done regardless of money.

"For me it's the joy of playing, the joy of scoring a goal, you can't beat it. I watch it all the time on the television, I still love my team Spurs as if I am one of the fans."

The defender was picked for England at the age of 31, in Sven-Goran Eriksson's first game in charge of the national side.

Powell played his part in a 3-0 friendly victory over Spain in February 2001 and also played in a World Cup qualifier against Finland.

His fifth and final appearance came a year later in a friendly against Holland, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Amsterdam Arena.
