The 26-year-old had been sidelined since November and a scan has revealed he is suffering from osteitis pubis - an inflammation of the pelvic bone.
"DJ has got a bigger problem than we originally thought," Foxes boss Ian Holloway told the club's website.
"That is horrendous news for us. But that is life and we have just got to get on with it."
Meanwhile, midfielder James Wesolowski is expected to be back in training within the next 10 days, and could be fit over the hectic Christmas period.
The 20-year-old has missed the last two matches against Ipswich Town and Hull City with a hamstring strain.
