Lineker: Time to help out

I have been a Leicester fan all my life and I had eight great years playing for the club, so it seemed right that I should get involved.

I have also got a couple of kids who support them, and like every other fan, I am deeply concerned about the state the club is in.

The fact is, its sheer existence is in doubt.

As they paid me a few bob over the years, I may as well pay them back

I can help in a small way financially but I can help in a bigger way by getting a group of people together and getting some publicity.

To be honest, I have been a bit taken aback by the amount of publicity we have got over the past few days.

But we are asking supporters to come and help us, and hope the Supporters Trust will get a member on the board - I think that is really important for a modern football club.

Allaying Micky's fears

Overall, we have still a long way to go but hopefully we can do it.

Micky Adams and his team are doing a great job here in incredibly trying circumstances, and that is one of the reasons for acting quickly.

We want to allay their fears, because there are bound to be some, so they can continue to play well and keep the club at the top of the table.

It would have taken some imagination when I was a young supporter, and then when I played for the club, to think that I would one day find myself in this situation.

No ego trip

But as they paid me a few bob over the years, I may as well pay them back.

Having said that, if a rich investor wants to come along, become chairman and run things, we will all gladly step aside.

This is not an ego trip for any of us; we are simply concerned supporters trying to help out with something we care deeply about.

I have supported Leicester all my life, and that is why I am desperate to ensure I can still come along to watch them play in the future.
