Leicester City captain Matt Elliott has revealed his sadness at the sacking of manager Peter Taylor.

And he claimed his team-mates feel the same about the dismissal of Taylor after a poor start to the season.

But he insisted there is still time for Leicester to pull themselves out of trouble this season - but his thoughts were for Taylor.

"The initial feeling is one of sadness," said the Scotland defender.

We have let Peter Taylor down - our performances have not been good enough
Leicester's Robbie Savage
"The players have just been spoken to by the manager. He kept it very brief - it was quite an emotional time for me.

"I don't think at times like this anyone is happy about the situation. It is not nice to see anyone lose their job.

"But the club has made their decision, and the players have to go along with that."

Elliott's fellow international Robbie Savage echoed his club captain's sentiments and added he takes Taylor's departure as a particular blow, because he enjoyed playing for him.

Savage:
Savage: "We let Taylor down"
He admitted: "We have let him down - our performances have not been good enough.

"When you look at the table it is us who are down at the bottom - and the table doesn't lie.

"It is up to us now to fight for the new manager and, we hope, stay in the league.

"I respect the manager immensely. He has done a fantastic job for me personally, and I have played my best football under him. But you have to accept the club's decision."

Savage pleaded with chairman John Elsom earlier in the season not to sack Taylor, explaining: "There was talk of the manager getting the sack, and I thought it was a bit unfair. We thought it was a bit early for the club to be considering sacking him.

Impey was shocked

"We thought he had put his heart and soul into the club and we owed it to him to go and see the chairman.

"After two or three games it would have been disappointing. But eight games into the season the club has made the decision - and we have to respect that."

Midfield man Andrew Impey said: "I am very shocked. I thought he would be given longer to turn it round, because I believe he could.

"I think he is a good manager, and he will be disappointed because he wanted to do it for Leicester.

"It was not that he was not liked. We had a lot of respect for him but we just did not do it for him."
