1860 Munich 0-1 Leeds (agg: 1-3)

Leeds United are through to the group stages of the Champions League after a victory over 1860 Munich in the final qualifying round.

Alan Smith's sweet strike just after half-time gave them a 1-0 win in Munich, 3-1 on aggregate.

Leeds had to soak up early pressure from the German side, with Nigel Martyn the busier of the goalkeepers.

But try as they might, 1860 failed to break the Leeds rearguard.

Germany veteran Thomas Hassler was Munich's biggest weapon.

His free-kicks caused problems but he hit the bar once and Martyn pulled off a number of great saves.

Danny Mills and Jonathan Woodgate both cleared off the line in the dying minutes to preserve Leeds' advantage.

Leeds manager David O'Leary can now look forward to the lucrative group stages, where they will join Manchester United and Arsenal, following their win.

It had been an impressive display by Leeds, who were blighted by injuries to top players.

Munich will have to settle for a place in the Uefa Cup but could not really complain after this performance.

Lucas Radebe, the Leeds captain, was a rock in the defence and all players made important interceptions to ensure United took their place in Europe's premier competition for the first time in eight years.
