Baggies declare Beckford interest

West Bromwich Albion have declared an interest in Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford, BBC Radio Leeds understands.

The 25-year-old is in the final year of his Elland Road contract and has only just been taken off the transfer list after failing to sign a new deal.

Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo is keen to sign another striker but sources close to the Championship club deny any official bid has been made.

It is understood Wolves have also expressed an interest in the player.

Beckford scored 34 goals for Leeds last season, helping them reach the League One play-off semi-finals.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson had stated earlier this week that the club were prepared to keep Beckford for this season and risk him leaving on a free transfer at its end.

They hoped Beckford would score the goals that would get them promoted and then would agree a new deal at the club.

West Brom's interest comes just days after Leeds lost their star midfielder Fabian Delph to Aston Villa for a fee believed to be at least £6m.

Leeds have given a trial to 22-year-old Argentine striker Mariano Tripodi, who currently plays for Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.

BBC Radio Leeds will have coverage of every single Leeds United game on 103.9 FM.
