Grayson sorry to see defender go

Luke Garbutt
Garbutt never made a senior appearance for Leeds

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson says the lure of the Premier League was too great for Luke Garbutt to resist.

Grayson tried to persuade the 16-year-old to stay at Elland Road before he made the decision to join Everton.

"You spend all your time developing them but there isn't any way of stopping them going to other clubs," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Apart from the tribunal which gives you the money you think that you are rightly due."

"That's Luke's decision that he felt going to Everton was going to be the best thing for his career.

"I spoke to him and his dad to try and convince him that staying at Leeds was the best thing for him.

"But obviously the lure of the Premiership was a little bit too much for him than to stay at our club."

Leeds United have issued a statement on the club's website: "The club has now received official confirmation that Everton have signed Luke Garbutt.

"Leeds United made the player an exceptional offer to join the club initially as a scholar and then as a professional player.

"We're disappointed that the player chose to join Everton.

"Leeds United are entitled to compensation and will also look into the circumstances surrounding his move."

Garbutt, who never featured in the Leeds first team, impressed for the England Under-17s in the recent European Championships in Germany.
