Douglas and Lucas to leave Leeds

League One side Leeds United have released midfielder Jonathan Douglas and goalkeeper David Lucas.

However the club have offered a new deal to striker Jermaine Beckford and are in talks with longest-serving player Frazer Richardson.

Manager Simon Grayson told the club's website: "I've said all along that I would evaluate the squad at the end of the season.

"I'd like to thank them (Douglas and Lucas) for their efforts."

Douglas, a Republic of Ireland international, made 166 appearances in four seasons at Elland Road after joining from Blackburn Rovers, initially on a season-long loan.

The club said it was "exceptionally difficult to agree terms acceptable to both parties" with the 27-year-old.

Lucas, 31, joined Leeds in August 2007 as an understudy to Casper Ankergren and made 24 appearances.

Departures are inevitable as we look to prepare in the best manner possible for next season

Grayson added: "I've spoken with the players, and I have to say that they have both been excellent professionals since I arrived in December.

"Up until last Thursday we didn't know what our league status would be for next season.

"I felt it was important that decisions were made as quickly as possible after that to allow us to move forward as a club and to give the players the best possible opportunity.

"I am looking to strengthen what we have here and while players will be coming in, departures are also inevitable as we look to prepare in the best manner possible for next season."
