Leeds begin search for new boss

Leeds United

Leeds have already begun their search for a new manager following Saturday's sacking of Gary McAllister, while also parting company with Steve Staunton.

Leeds confirmed on their website that Staunton, who was assistant boss, has followed McAllister out of Elland Road.

Neil Thompson and Andy Beasley took charge of training on Monday morning, but Leeds said: "We hope to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible."

Blackpool boss Simon Grayson has emerged as favourite for the post.

Grayson, who was born in Yorkshire and began his playing career at Leeds, took over as manager of the Seasiders in 2005 and led them to promotion to the Championship less then two years later.

Gus Poyet and Aidy Boothroyd are the other names in the frame.

Former Watford boss Boothroyd, 37, left Vicarage Road in November but has ties to the Yorkshire club after spending a year at Elland Road as coach during the 2004-05 season.

Poyet, 41, was assistant manager at Leeds under Dennis Wise between October 2006 and October 2007.

He left Leeds to become Tottenham assistant coach but almost exactly a year later was sacked at the same time as then-manager Juande Ramos.
