Leeds captain Lucas Radebe has been ruled out for the season because of a knee injury.

Radebe was injured against Sunderland last Saturday when returning from a previous knock suffered against Real Madrid a month ago.

He tore medial ligaments and has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee.

His loss has dealt Leeds a major blow as they challenge for Champions League honours.

I would like to think I have an even chance of being available before the season is over

And, unless they win the competition, Leeds need to secure a top three Premiership finish to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Leeds manager David O'Leary said: "It's a blow to lose the Chief for the run in to the season.

"But nobody can underestimate his powers of recovery and the determination he will show to bounce back."

Radebe is hoping to prove his manger wrong and recover before the season's end.

He said: "I am obviously very disappointed at the timing of the injury.

"The league run in and the Champions League games are critical to the club, but the boys have showed the strength in depth the gaffer has worked hard to build.

"I am always positive and I would like to think I have an even chance of being available before the season is over."
