Martyn out until Christmas

Another setback has delayed Martyn's return to action
Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has been ruled out until Christmas after aggravating a groin injury which has already sidelined him since mid-October.

Martyn had been on course to return early next month after sustaining the problem, which ended his run of 68 consecutive appearances, in a 3-1 win at home to Charlton.

But the 34-year-old has since suffered a setback in training, pushing back the date of his return by at least a fortnight, albeit extending the first-team run of Paul Robinson.

The 21-year-old had patiently waited for his chance and has since proven himself with a string of exemplary performances, earning him the Carling young player of the month award for October.

Setback

Following last night's 2-0 defeat in the opening match of the Champions League second phase at home to Real Madrid, Robinson confirmed Martyn's setback.

Robinson's first team run will be extended
"Nigel has come back a bit too early and the injury has flared up again," said Robinson.

"He is going for a scan again but I don't think it's too serious. He will just need another week or two and I hope he comes back soon.

"But it's been really good after 16 months on the bench to prove to myself I can do it at the top level."

Robinson had no chance of preventing the reigning European champions from outclassing Leeds as two goals in two minutes in the second half from skipper Fernando Hierro and Raul proved decisive.
