Kilmarnock's Alexei Eremenko fears leg break in SPL

Kilmarnock star Alexei Eremenko fears hard-tackling players in the Scottish Premier League could break his leg.

The Finnish international says that he spends most of his time trying to avoid being seriously injured.

"In Scotland it is physical and they like playing hard and I have nothing against playing hard," he said.

"But it's crazy to think there are people who would try to injure you or break somebody's leg. Against Rangers I felt the tackles were pretty bad."

Steven Naismith and Steven Davis were both booked for fouls against the 27-year-old when Kilmarnock were beaten 3-0 at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup.

The Killie playmaker describes some of the tackles in that match as "really, really shocking" but says he has developed a "strategy" for avoiding harm.

"I remember taking the ball to the corner and they just smashed me," he said.

"I think about trying to avoid the dangerous tackles and I've been good at that.

"People think I jump because I'm trying to get a free-kick but I'm jumping to protect myself.

There are nutcases in every country and I don't think they are going out to deliberately hurt me, although maybe managers are telling them to play hard with me

"If I stay on the ground when someone is going to tackle me then they are going to break my leg."

Eremenko, who joined Kilmarnock on loan from Metalist Kharkiv last summer, was sent off against Dundee United last month after kicking out at Scott Robertson.

The midfielder believes the sending off was harsh and claims he has actually got better at dealing with rough tackles.

"If I was younger, four or five years ago, then I would react directly but now I am more calm," he said.

"I just try to react by trying to annoy the other teams by the way I play and by doing good things with the ball.

"Sometimes you just go over the edge. But I don't think it was a red card (against United) as I didn't really kick him.

"The scenario was that everyone crowded the referee and started screaming at him.

"He reacted with a red card but that's football."

Eremenko believes skilful players face the same kind of treatment wherever they play.

He added: "The position I play means I am always getting kicked, and when you see other players similar to me, they get a few red cards as they are always getting kicked, kicked, kicked.

"There are nutcases in every country and I don't think they are going out to deliberately hurt me, although maybe managers are telling them to play hard with me.

"Maybe they want me to lose my temper but we are all human and this is our job."
