Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen felt his side's 2-0 victory against Aberdeen was one of the most significant of the season so far.

"It was a very important win," said the Killie boss. "Aberdeen have good players and they can use that to beat anyone in this league.

"But thankfully today, we were in control of the game.

"The boys handled it well, and a couple of times we showed how dangerous we can be on the break."

Conor Sammon's 14th goal of the season gave Killie a half-time lead, the striker converting a rebound shot after Alexei Eremenko's free-kick was saved.

Eremenko was fouled in the box by keeper Jamie Langfield and Jamie Hamill stroked home the resulting penalty, then Sammon came close again before the end.

"I always want the centre-forwards scoring goals, and it's good to see Connor do that," said Paatelainen.

"It's also good to see him working hard for the other players too.

"It's important to score that first goal against a team like Aberdeen.

"They've had very poor luck recently, and we thought if we got the first goal and nicked in front, we might win the game, which turned out to be right.

"We passed the ball well, although, we had a couple of unforced errors because the pitch was a bit bobbly."
