Mixu Paatelainen rues slack defending in Killie defeat

Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen was frustrated after watching his side concede cheap goals in the 3-2 defeat by Rangers at Rugby Park.

Conor Sammon fired a double but a Kenny Miller hat-trick and a red card for Mohamadou Sissoko saw Killie lose.

"We created chances and scored two goals against Rangers; the three goals we conceded were absolute jokes," Paatelainen told BBC Scotland.

"I thought it was a good match and we caused them a lot of problems."

Sammon fired the home side in front from close range on 21 minutes but Miller replied from the penalty spot five minutes before the interval.

Goalkeeper Cammy Bell played a short pass to Jamie Hamill but the panicked full-back tried to return it and only succeeded in playing in Miller, who was fouled by Sissoko.

Sissoko was ordered off for conceding his second penalty, with Miller again converting on 55 minutes.

Sammon slid in at the back post to level, only for Miller to seal the points with a finish from six yards and extend Rangers' lead at the top of the table.

Despite some impressive football, Kilmarnock were left to rue what might have been against the defending SPL champions.

"I saw exactly what happened out there and it's very disappointing," said Paatelainen.

"I thought it was a good match and we caused them lots of problems.

"I can't fault the players for their efforts or the way they passed the ball and made runs.

It's unfortunate, but playing this type of football, you might concede goals like that

"If you concede goals like that against Rangers then you're asking for trouble."

Paatelainen was frustrated by his side's decision-making at two of the Rangers goals.

"We want to pass the ball but it's also important to know when the pass if forcing things," he said.

"I felt that we forced things and were asking for trouble. It's unfortunate, but playing this type of football, you might concede goals like that.

"It's disappointing and the players must learn."

Paatelainen said he had no complaints over either penalty, nor Sissoko's sending off.

"They were both penalties," he said. "In Sissoko's case it was clumsy; if he pulled him back then it's a yellow card and it's a sending off - simple as that."
