Kilmarnock complete defender deal

Steven Old
Old has signed a three-year deal with the SPL outfit

Kilmarnock have signed New Zealand defender Steven Old after he was granted a work permit.

The 23-year-old, who has been on trial at Rugby Park for more than two months, has signed a three-year deal.

"It's been a long process," the Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies told the club website.

"Steven is short of match practice and will probably be looking at a fresh start with the rest of the squad in the pre-season - but never say never."

Old previously played for the Macarthur Rams, Wellington Phoenix and the Newcastle United Jets in the New South Wales Premier League.

The defender has captained his side at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 level and featured for the national side at the Beijing Olympics.

Jefferies said his latest signing would bolster his defensive options.

"Steven has to fly back to New Zealand as soon as possible to get his passport stamped at the British Consulate in Wellington and then return to Scotland," he added.

"If any opportunities come up before the end of this season, we may put him in.

"He is the right age with international experience and we've been looking for a while now to bring in a young centre-back as Ryan O'Leary is the only one we have at the moment.

"The two have formed a good partnership in training."
