Durrant quits over knee injury
Ian Durrant in action for Kilmarnock
Ian Durrant has been forced to quit the game
Kilmarnock midfielder Ian Durrant has called time on his 18-year professional career after persistent problems with a knee injury.

The 35-year-old, whose career was hampered by a cruciate ligament knee injury while with Rangers, has since undergone an operation to repair more damaged knee ligaments.

He has not kicked a ball for the Kilmarnock first-team since the CIS Insurance Cup final against Celtic 13 months ago.

The former Rangers man will continue as a coach with the Rugby Park club under manager Jim Jefferies.

But, despite the horror tackle by Neil Simpson in 1988 which kept him out of the game for three years at his peak, Durrant maintains he has no regrets.

"At the time, I regretted what happened but, as you get older, you get over it," he said.

"There are a lot worse things have happened than Ian Durrant getting injured.

"I have accepted it and have to get on with it. I have no regrets and can look back with a smile on my face," he added.

Injury made Durrant's decision to retire a little easier to make.

"It was made easier due to the fact that I was still in a bit of pain with my knee.

"It hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be. Obviously, you think you are invincible and can play forever but I knew two or three weeks ago."
