Ipswich Town's Damien Delaney backs Roy Keane's style

Ipswich Town centre-half Damien Delaney has defended boss Roy Keane's right to let off steam at his players.

Town were kept in their dressing room for an hour after Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Derby County.

"Yes, it was heated, but that's just a measure of his ambition," Delaney, 29, told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"The day the manager stops having a go at the team is the day I'll be worried because that's the day he thinks 'I can't get anymore out of this group'."

Keane was renowned for his fiery nature on the pitch during his playing days with Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Celtic, and Delaney says he has learned to deal with his boss's temper.

"It doesn't bother me, you don't take it on a personal level. If he's having a go at you, it means he expects more from you," he said.

"He never carries into the next day or holds it against you.

"He likes laying down challenges for players and he likes questioning people and getting a reaction out of them."

Irishman Delaney was part of the side that was undone by the Rams in midweek, leaving Town seventh in the Championship.

But the current campaign is still a stark contrast to last season, which saw Keane's side battling against relegation.

We do have a legitimate chance of making the play-offs and it requires a different type of mental attitude

"This year we're faced with a completely different challenge, instead of trying to stay up we're trying to go up," Delaney added.

"To be so close to embedding yourself in the top six was a massive opportunity. We missed it, but you know what, we go again Saturday [against Barnsley].

"We do have a legitimate chance of making the play-offs and it requires a different type of mental attitude.

"When you get beat you need to bounce back and I think the lads have that, definitely."
