Hreidarsson confusion cleared up

Wimbledon have confirmed that Hermann Hreidarsson could be an Ipswich player by Thursday.

And they are preparing for his departure by moving to sign Everton defender Richard Dunne - as well as weighing up a 4m bid for Norwich City's Craig Bellamy.

Confusion surrounded the future of the Wimbledon defender after the Dons insisted they had not yet accepted Ipswich's 4m offer for the Icelandic international.

But Wimbledon have now come clean saying they are prepared to sell Hreidarsson so they can invest in new players.

Dons boss Terry Burton has set out to sign Everton defender Dunne. If the deal is completed, it will pave the way for Hreidarsson to go to Ipswich.

Ipswich Town manager George Burley will break the club transfer record with a signing which will cost the Portman Road club around 4m.

The move to Portman Road would smash Ipswich's existing transfer record, laid out on Marcus Stewart last season.

Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks said: "We eventually managed to tie the deal up.

"We are delighted that we have got a proven international player to boost our defence."

The 26-year-old centre-half is not the first defender that Burley has been reportedly interested in over the summer - Hearts duo Gary Naysmith and Colin Cameron and former Ipswich full-back Mauricio Taricco are other names that have been linked with the Portman Road club.

Good squad

However the only addition that Burley had made to his rearguard in the close season is the free transfer move for Tottenham's John Scales.

Burley said: "We need players who we feel can cope in the Premiership.

"We've got a good squad of players at the moment, and to improve on that you've got to pay decent money to bring players in," he said.

Hreidarsson was in the Wimbledon side that drew 0-0 with Tranmere at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The defender, known for charging forward during attacking moves has spent time in all the Nationwide divisions as well as the Premiership

Then Wimbledon manager Egil Olsen signed the Icelander from Brentford for a 2.5m in October 1999 after an impressive spell for the Bees.
