Luciano Civelli's Ipswich Town return a success

Luciano Civelli played his first match in 16 months as Ipswich Town beat Newmarket 9-1 in a friendly on Tuesday.

The Argentine midfielder, 23, played 30 minutes as a second-half substitute at Cricket Field Road.

He had been sidelined since March 2009 when he suffered extensive knee ligament damage during a league game against Burnley.

Manager Roy Keane told the club website: "It was great for the fans to see him again."

He added: "It was good to see him back playing again but we have to be careful with him.

"Sixteen months is a long, long time out and it's not just about the physical side of recovering from that injury but the mental side as well.

"Hopefully he's got through the first barrier. we can look to give him another run out on Friday."

Striker Pablo Counago netted a hat-trick for Ipswich while Owen Garvan scored twice and Grant Leadbitter, Lee Martin, Colin Healy and Alan Quinn added the rest.

Friday sees Town head to Histon for their second pre-season friendly after the trip to Southend was cancelled.
