Keane eager to learn from errors

Keane remains as competitive as a boss as he was a player

Ipswich boss Roy Keane says he is determined to learn from the mistakes he has made in his managerial career.

Keane, who resigned as Sunderland boss in December and took over at Ipswich in April, told BBC Radio 5 live: "At Sunderland I was slightly impatient.

"Maybe at the end I brought in good players but not necessarily the right characters that suited the club.

"I want to build a good, hardworking team here at Ipswich, with a good spirit - not a set of individuals."

However, while Keane recognises "impatience is one of my flaws" he has still set himself the goal of getting Ipswich promoted from the Championship to the Premier League within two years.

"I have signed a two-year contract here and if I haven't got Ipswich into the Premier League by then, I will have failed. It is as simple as that," he told Sportsweek.

"I still have a hell of a lot to learn. I have had only just over 100 games as a manger. I am learning all the time, in terms of dealing with players, agents, my own staff, the media, fans' expectations.

"Hopefully I will learn from the mistakes I made at Sunderland."

The Irishman, who guided the Black Cats to the Premier League in 2006-07, is desperate to do the same for his new club - but he also revealed his ambition does not stop there, and hinted he would have to move on to realise it.

"I am very hungry and very ambitious. I want to work in the Premier League and I feel have the potential to do that," he said.

"I feel capable of running a top, top club. I want to manage teams who are challenging for trophies and playing in the Champions League.

"I need to be a little bit more patient with myself. You have to have a hell of a lot of experience to manage the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

"But I am confident that one day I will be manager of one of the big teams."
