Dutchman Balkestein joined Ipswich from Heerenveen in the summer
Ipswich Town defender Pim Balkestein is set to return to action in the reserves at home to Southend on Tuesday night.
The 21-year-old has missed Ipswich's last three games with a groin problem.
With Ben Thatcher unlikely to be fit in time for Saturday's Championship game against Swansea, Balkestein's return is a timely boost for boss Jim Magilton.
Striker Jordan Rhodes is also included in the reserve squad after returning from his month on loan at League Two club Rochdale.
