Ipswich Town announced they have finally completed a settlement on the remainder of Finidi George's contract.
He has won 62 caps for Nigeria
The 32-year-old Nigerian will leave Portman Road with immediate effect and will be paid a percentage of his salary over the two years remaining on the four-year deal was on.
Neither Ipswich nor George's agents would release a settlement figure but it is thought to be worth around £1m.
George joined Ipswich from Real Mallorca for £3.1m in August 2001 but failed to keep a place in the Town side and was given a free transfer by manager Joe Royle in December 2002.
Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks said: "Finidi did not feature in Joe Royle's plans for the future.
"It might be an understatement to say that his career with Ipswich has been as disappointing for the club as it has, no doubt, for him.
"Despite the cost, early termination of the contract made best sense for Ipswich Town.
"Both parties can now draw a line under this unhappy episode. However, I would like to wish him all the best for his future."
