Inverness boss Terry Butcher, whose side now sit in fourth place in the Scottish Premier League, believes their lofty position is down to team spirit.

Adam Rooney scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Hibernian to make it three league wins on the trot.

"Hibs are a good side but I thought we showed a lot of spirit," said Butcher.

"We've got good players and good characters, and players who are really enjoying their football. When you've got that, you'll give it everything."

Richie Foran put the Highlanders in front early in the match before striker Rooney scored from the penalty spot, the result of a handball incident that meant Paul Hanlon had to take an early bath.

There is a lot of heart in the squad, that's the important thing, a real belief in the whole team

Derek Riordan pulled one back for 10-man Hibs but Inverness responded powerfully, with Rooney scoring his second on the break then another after Liam Miller's penalty had given the travelling Hibs fans hope that they might yet claim a point.

"It was an incredible match," Butcher told BBC Scotland. "The response after we conceded the goals was terrific.

"Adam Rooney worked his socks off. There is a lot of heart in the squad, that's the important thing, a real belief in the whole team.

"We might have taken teams by surprise with the way that we can pass it.

"We are not a route-one team. We don't rely on a bit of luck."

Inverness have gone a year without losing a match away from home in the league. They will surely face a stiff test in their next test.

"Celtic away next, a nice easy match," joked Butcher. "We'll look forward to that.

"We've got into a really good position in the league and now we want to consolidate that and see if we can go further. "
