Hibernian have signed Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder midfielder John Rankin for £110,000.
Rankin had a three-year spell as a Manchester United trainee
New Easter Road manager Mixu Paatelainen's first signing has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract.
And the 24-year-old will go straight into the squad for Saturday's Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle.
"John is a very direct player, he wants to get forward, to get into the box and I like that," Paatelainen told the Edinburgh Evening News.
Both St Mirren and Falkirk had bids rejected for the former Manchester United trainee.
"His attitude is fantastic and I am really looking forward to working with him," added Paatelainen.
"I like players with a determined attitude who want to improve and do their best and he is one.
"John had a spell with Manchester United as a youngster which is a fantastic school for any young boy to learn his trade.
"He has a good knowledge of the game and, although he is still only 24, he has a lot of experience as he's played regular first-team football.
"John knows I want to use him in his natural role so there was no surprises there for him.
"I'm sure he is excited about joining us and sees this as an opportunity to come here and show what a good player he is.
"It will be a big game for him to go into an Edinburgh derby which is always a special occasion.
"But it is one I am sure he will relish, the atmosphere will be great.
Rankin began his career at Manchester United but moved to Ross County in 2003, having failed to break through at Old Trafford.
He has netted three goals in 18 appearances for Inverness this season but was not included in the squad for the Scottish Cup defeat by Hibs on Saturday.
