Smithies exit possible - Hoyle

Alex Smithies
Smithies has played 10 games this season for Huddersfield

Huddersfield Town chairman-elected Dean Hoyle has revealed goalkeeper Alex Smithies could leave in the summer.

The 18-year-old England under-19 international will be out of contract in the summer.

Hoyle exclusively told BBC Radio Leeds: "We offered his agent exactly what they wanted to the penny and we expected him to sign last week.

"But higher division clubs are now after him and that is the problem. But we won't sell him at the moment"

Smithies has become Huddersfield's first choice keeper, ahead of the more experienced Matt Glennon.

His form has help Town turn around their season under new boss Lee Clark.

We are not a selling club and he will be here until the summer

Huddersfield chairman-elect Dean Hoyle
Hoyle added: "We thought we had a deal after matching what Alex's agent demand.

"But the likes of QPR, Spurs, Everton and Portsmouth are all scouting him.

"The agent rang us up and told us the goal post had moved after we thought we had a deal.

"We don't want to disable the club or Alex so at worst he'll leave in the summer.

"We'll then go to a tribunal for him as we feel he's worth a lot - we've had him since age eight.

"There is no hard feeling here between us and Alex. If he wants to further his career with another club then good luck to him.

"This season is important to us and we want Alex here until the end of the campaign.

"We are not a selling club and he will be here until the summer."
