Hibs snap up Iranian winger Haji
John Collins
John Collins said Haji would prove an asset
Hibernian have made the former Real Zaragoza teenager Shana Haji the SPL's first Iranian import.

The winger, 18, impressed boss John Collins on trial to earn a deal until the end of the season.

He was denied the chance to make his debut against Dunfermline reserves on Tuesday after not receiving international clearance in time.

Haji spent a year with Zaragoza after coming through the ranks with Iranian champions Esteghlal.

Norwegian side Tromso had offered the youngster a trial last season but where he turned down an option to stay.

He looks promising for 18 and he can play wide right or left

Haji - who also had a training stint at West Bromwich Albion - has been capped at Under-20 level by Iran, where he is regarded as one of the top young prospects.

Collins, therefore, hopes to see the Easter Road club benefit from his potential.

"For his age he is well-developed, powerfully-built, very quick and skilful," he said.

"He looks promising for 18 and he can play wide right or left.

"The fact is that, as a club, we can't go out and buy the finished article.

"We have to look at players whom we can develop.

"We saw something in Shana in training which we liked and, having seen enough in a couple of sessions, we had to sign him to see more."
