Garry O'Connor celebrates his equaliser

Garry O'Connor scored with 13 minutes remaining to give Hibernian a hard-fought draw in their Intertoto Cup clash with Vetra Vilnius.

Both sides had missed chances during the second-round, first-leg tie before the Lithuanians broke the deadlock.

Defender Nerijus Sasnauskas pounced during a goalmouth scramble to put Vetra ahead after 63 minutes.

But striker O'Connor hit a right-foot drive low into the net from 16 yards to equalise after a corner.

Hibs were without six first-team players through injury in what was their first game since returning for pre-season training.

Vetra, already 10 games into their season and having progressed through the first round of the Intertoto Cup, started the better in conditions made farcical by a torrential downpour just prior to kick-off.

Striker Karvelis Vytautas squandered a couple of early chances, failing to control the ball when he had Hibs goalkeeper Alistair Brown in his sights.

Scott Brown missed a sitter when he shot straight at Poskus Marias after O'Connor's driven cross had found the Hibs striker's feet only six yards from goal after 27 minutes.

Full-back Alan Reid drove just wide of the post from 30-yards.

But Vetra missed the best chance of the first half, when Sernas Darvydas was sent clean through by Vytautas, but the midfielder slid his shot narrowly wide from 20 yards.

Hibs took control after the break, only for Sasnauskas to put Vetra into the lead against the run of play following a corner.

Steven Whittaker fired wide from 12 yards as the Scottish side pressed for the equaliser.

It eventually came following a Stephen Glass corner, Brown playing the ball back into the box for O'Connor to round off an excellent personal performance to grab a goal that will give Hibs hope going into the second leg.
