Hibernian have signed Scotland international defender Gary Caldwell until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old, who spent three months on loan at Hibs in 2002, negotiatiated an early release from Newcastle.
"I have made no secret of the fact that I love it at Easter Road," said Caldwell, who has made five appearances for Scotland.
"I've always said that should the opportunity arise to return here I would jump at it."
The defender began this season on loan at Derby County and played 10 games at Pride Park.
Hibs will assess his fitness ahead of Saturday's league clash with Dundee.
"Gary is a tremendous player and will be a great addition to the club," said Hibs boss Bobby Williamson.
"I've worked with him both here at Easter Road when he was last at the club on loan, and with the Scotland Under-21 squad - I am delighted to have secured his signature."
