Jefferies has no concerns over debt

Hearts manager Jim Jefferies says he is not too concerned that the club's finances show a debt of almost £35m.

That was a £5m increase over the year to July and came despite staff salaries being cut by £800,000.

"It's all about budgets for me and I just have to get the best out of the budget that is being made available," Jefferies told BBC Scotland.

"I have said in the past - even if it was halved, it would still be a thoroughly good budget to work with."

The latest financial results show that the club's wage bill is more than £10m per year and Jefferies believes that his budget is still enough to put a competitive team on the park.

"It's not my side of things," he said about the overall debt figure. "The club have more qualified people to deal with that side than I am."

I'm not sure what the best result for us would be at Fir Park, but it won't matter anyway if we lose to United

Hearts host third-top Dundee United on Wednesday knowing that anything other than a win is likely to spell an end to their hopes of qualifying for next season's Europa League.

Jefferies' side are currently in sixth place in the table, three points behind Edinburgh rivals Hibernian and four adrift of Motherwell.

But, with those two being in opposition on Wednesday in Motherwell, Hearts have a chance to make up ground.

"I'm not sure what the best result for us would be at Fir Park, but it won't matter anyway if we lose to United," said Jefferies.

"We have to win the game and only after that will our thoughts turn to what's happening elsewhere.

"The players have done a really good job to give us a chance and, with two home games to go, it's a great opportunity."

Meanwhile, Jefferies also stated that former captain Michael Stewart will not be part of the squad for Wednesday night's match.

The manager refused to be drawn on whether the midfielder will feature in Sunday's meeting with Celtic in the final game of the season.

Stewart's contract runs out at the end of the season and he has not featured since he was replaced at half-time during their defeat by Motherwell 10 days ago.

Hearts will be without suspended pair Laryea Kingston and David Obua for United's visit and have Andrew Driver, Jose Goncalves, Marian Kello and Janos Balogh missing through injury.
