Hearts defender Jose Goncalves now believes there is a good chance he will remain at the club beyond the summer.

The former Portugal Under-21 international had been linked with a move away from the club, with Celtic among the clubs said to be interested.

However, Goncalves has entered talks with the Tynecastle club with the view of extending his stay in Edinburgh.

"We are in talks at the moment and we will see in the next couple of weeks what's going on," he said.

There had been suggestions that the left-sided defender could move during the current transfer window, following his recovery from a long-term thigh injury, but this was definitely ruled out by the player.

"I will stay here definitely. I know there are a lot of stories about me, but I am happy here,'' said the 24-year-old.

Goncalves was also positive about his longer-term future in Edinburgh.

"We are in talks at the moment and we will see in the next couple of weeks what's going on," he said.

"What's the best for me and the club? If I have the possibility to stay, I will.

"There's a good chance I will stay. I'm here four years and, if the club want me, I'm happy to stay."

Although Hearts head coach Csaba Laszlo has been frustrated at the lack of transfer activity during this January window, Goncalves believes the club are showing some signs of ambition by signing the likes of Falkirk captain Darren Barr, who will join the Edinburgh club in the summer after agreeing a pre-contract move.

And Goncalves has hinted that, if more players were to arrive in the summer transfer window, that might encourage him to stay at the Scottish Premier League club.

"To get some ambition and motivation from the club is very important to go forward," he added.

"If we get some good quality players you can see the club want to build on something."
