Beckham inspires awardee Thomson

Thomson has slotted in to right-back since Robbie Neilson departed Hearts

Craig Thomson hopes his young player of the month award is not the only product of his bid to emulate his footballing inspiration, David Beckham.

The 18-year-old collected his Clydesdale Bank award in the Scottish Premier League saying he was trying to copy the former Real Madrid midfielder.

"I've always watched David Beckham and looked up to him as a role model," said the Hearts right-back.

"His delivery from free-kicks is so good. I just try to copy what he did."

Thomson, who has broken into the Hearts side this season, admits that he has not yet matched Beckham's free-kick prowess but believes that his corner technique can help him remain in the team.

"I have been given the job of taking the corners by the gaffer since getting into the team and hopefully he's happy with what he's been seeing," said Thomson.

"I read Beckham's autobiography and he said he used to hang tyres from the goalposts and just whip the ball in.

"I've never had any tyres to do that, but I'll do things like put bibs in the corners of the goals and try to hit them.

"I was second-top goalscorer in the 19s last season. It was mainly from free-kicks and penalties. I think I only scored two of the 12 from open play."

Hearts lost Robbie Neilson to Leicester City in the summer then understudy Jason Thomson and stand-in Eggert Jonsson suffered injury.

Craig Thomson has since grabbed his chance and helped Hearts pick up nine points from four matches during September.

"I never expected to win anything this quickly," said the boyhood Hearts fan who particularly enjoyed his debut against Dinamo Zagreb and the visit to Celtic Park.

"I've only been playing for a month and I've started seven games - I never expected that.

"I was hoping to make the bench most weeks this season.

"As it happens, Jason Thomson got injured and I got my chance and have taken it."
