Berra warned over transfer choice

Hearts defender Christophe Berra
Berra has been tipped to head a January exodus from Hearts

Steven Pressley has tipped his successor as Hearts captain to be a top-class player as long as he chooses his next club carefully.

The Scotland coach believes it is only a matter of time before Christophe Berra moves from Tynecastle.

"In order to allow his development to continue, he has to go to a club where he is going to play first-team football," said Pressley.

"So he has to be careful in that decision when the time comes."

Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov inspired speculation about a January exodus from the Edinburgh club by saying that Hearts might have to sell some players.

Berra, now a Scotland international, is among their main assets and has admitted that he has ambitious to play for a bigger club.

"Christophe is receiving a lot of positive media at this moment in time and it is very well deserved," said Pressley.

I look at Craig Gordon and I think he made a very wise decision

"I think he is going to be a terrific player.

"He followed on from me in terms of taking the captaincy and has grown in to the role and his performances this season have been fantastic.

"He has all the attributes to be a really top-class, modern-day central defender.

"He's quick, strong, aggressive and is commanding in his play.

"There are one or two aspects that he has to improve upon, but he is a lad that works extremely hard at his game.

"I don't know the financial position of Hearts and whether they need to sell players or can continue to hold on to their prize assets.

"But Hearts are always going to be a selling club and, in time, Christophe will move on, especially if he maintains his level of performance.

"However, he has to be careful with his choice and Andrew Driver is in a very similar position."

Winger Driver has also been linked with a move from Tynecastle and Pressley believes that they should follow the example of former Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who moved to Sunderland for 9m in 2007.

"I look at Craig Gordon and I think he made a very wise decision," said Pressley.

"There was speculation at the time that some top Premier League clubs were very interested in him, but he turned them down and stayed at Hearts for a further year.

"He then opted for a side that were in the lower part of the Premier League and that enabled him to play on a regular basis and continue his progression.

"So they have to be wise with their choice of clubs and I'm sure they will be because they are both very smart guys."
