Former Hearts player and coach John Cumming has died at the age of 78, the Edinburgh club have announced.

Cumming helped Hearts to two league championship successes, in 1958 and 1960, as well as four League Cup final triumphs, in 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1963.

The former miner was also part of the Scottish Cup winning team in 1956.

He joined Hearts from Carluke Rovers in 1948 and made 612 appearances before moving on to the coaching staff in 1967, serving the club until 1976.

The most decorated player in Hearts' history was known as the 'Iron Man' due to his determined style and resilience.

Cumming, who won just nine caps for Scotland, began his career as a left winger and later moved back to occupy the left-back and half-back positions.

A club statement said: "His contribution to the Heart of Midlothian Football Club was outstanding.

"As one of the greatest players ever to wear a maroon shirt, John richly deserved his testimonial in 1980.

"Our thoughts go to his family at this sad time."
