Spanish midfielder Ruben Palazuelos appears poised to sign for Hearts after the 24-year-old paid Gimnastic £200,000 to release him from his contract.
Ruben Palazuelos joined Hearts in pre-season training
His agent, Paulo Barbosa, has been in talks with Hearts majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov after a trial spell.
And Barbosa told the Edinburgh Evening News: "Everything is in place. He just has to officially sign the contract, which is for four years.
"He paid the money from his own pocket. It was 300,000 Euros in total."
Palazuelos had spent last season on loan to Greek outfit Aris but was due to return to his Spanish club.
"In Spain, some players have a clause in their contract that allows them to free themselves from the club for a specific fee and Ruben had this clause with Gimnastic," explained Barbosa.
He signed for Kaunas but he also has a three-and-a-half-year contract in principle with Hearts
Fernando Screpis' agent, Juan Cobian
"He is very happy. The negotiations with Romanov were hard, but everything is good now.
"It is a good move for him and he is looking forward to beginning training with Hearts in Germany.
"Ruben plays defensive midfield and is left footed. He came from the schools of Santander, so he is a tough player and I think he will do well in Scotland."
It appears that Hearts see Palazuelos as a replacement for the departed Julien Brellier, with his agent claiming that Panathinaikos were also interested in his signature.
Meanwhile, Argentine midfielder Fernando Screpis, who has also been on trial with Hearts, has reportedly completed his move to Romanov-sponsored Lithuanian club Kaunas.
The 28-year-old, who was no longer wanted by Defensores de Belgrano, has been given a short-term contract with the promise of an opportunity at Tynecastle in January.
Screpis' representative, Juan Cobian, said: "He signed for Kaunas but he also has a three-and-a-half-year contract in principle with Hearts. This will begin in January 2008.
"He expected and wanted to be at Hearts from the beginning, but they didn't want that to happen right now."
Screpis had been accompanied on trial by countryman Damian Gimenez, but Hearts have so far not pursued their interest in the left-back available from Neuva Chicago.
However, Belarus striker Vyacheslav Hleb, presently with Romanov-sponsored Ripo Minsk, is expected to join Hearts' training camp in Germany on trial.
Hearts striker Mauricio Pinilla has been ruled out of action until September after a wrist injury suffered while he was in Chile proved more serious than was first believed.
