Hartlepool stretched by fixture schedule - Wadsworth

Hartlepool United first-team coach Mick Wadsworth says his small squad will have to be managed carefully through the club's hectic fixture schedule.

Wadsworth has just 25 outfield players available when fit, amid a run of seven games in March, and injury worries include James Brown and Neil Austin.

"The intensity of the work has to drop," Wadsworth told BBC Tees.

"It's about recovery, we're not cutting corners, but time-wise and intensity-wise we have to dilute it."

Wadsworth added: "It's maintenance really, keeping them recovering from games and doing the proper recovery work which we do, but doing enough work to maintain a level of fitness that is needed."

Pools were able to field midfielder Paul Murray in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by Huddersfield, despite the 34-year-old missing Saturday's 2-1 win at Exeter City with a knee injury.

"If you look at his record, he's got an amazing appearance record this season, I don't know how many games he's started but the majority he has started he's done really well, and he has done two games in four games," Wadsworth continued.

"Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday for any player that's tough, so at the right time we have to give Paul a rest.

"What happened last week was that his knee was sore, so we left him at home last weekend, he was fine by Monday and did very well on Tuesday night I would say."

Murray, who joined the club on a free transfer in August last year, has made 34 appearances for Pools, scoring once.
